On April 17, 1873 , Jan and his wife Celia and their sixchildren(they were to have two more: Jennie and Jay) arrived inNew York City. Jan, Celia, and his brother Gerrit and his wifeGeertrudia and their three children had embarked some weeksearlier from the Netherlands port of Rotterdam. They hadtravelled aboard the ship MAAS (Netherlands/ American steamNavigation Company, travelling third class (steerage) which islisted as the space between decks. The occupation of both menwere listed as farmers and that of the women as housewives.According to the 1890 census, John Roest, aged 65 and his wifeCelia, aged 69 lived at 700 Union St., Grand Rapids, NI withtheir son Jay, aged 20, daughter Jennie, aged 18 and grandsonIsaac Gysbeck aged 12. In 1900, his brother Gerit lived at 219Travers in Grand Rapids with their two grandsons, Gerrit J.Loppesmi (19) born Feb., 1875, Jake deKoning (20) born Oct.,1879 and a granddaughter, Gertrude Loppesmir (19) born Feb.,1880.
