Grace Rafter Meitzel

Grace Rafter Meitzel, of Billings, passed away June 16, 2003.

She was born in Hogeland on Nov. 30, 1921. In her younger years, she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. Grace married Elmer Meitzel of Fort Peck on April 25, 1940. Together, they farmed in the Savage area before taking a job for a construction company where Grace flagged on the highway. The last 18 years before retirement, she worked for Billings News Inc. She loved yard work and painting pictures of birds and scenery.

Grace is survived by her four children, Bill (Carol) Meitzel, Billings, Wilma Kuehn, Butte, Bob (Debbie) Meitzel, Renton, Wash., and Mary (Gary) Schmidt, Huntley; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ordway Rafter, Lewistown; two sisters, Garnet Sumner, Lanexa, Va., and Molley Thronson, Bellevue, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Agnes Thorn, Salem, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. Grace also had many friends that will miss her dearly.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Meitzel; parents, William and Elsie Rafter; brothers, Clayton and Richard Rafter; sisters, Erma Klungland, Ruby Murphy and Beth Dolven; and great-grandson, Chase.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 19, at 10 a.m., at Terrace Gardens. Cremation has taken place and memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice.

Grace Meitzel

   Grace (Rafter) Meitzel, 81, passed away on June 16, 2003, in Billings. Cremation has taken place and graveside services were held on Thursday, June 19, at the Smith Terrace Gardens in Billings. Memorials may be made to Big Sky Hospice in Billings.

   Grace was born to William and Elsie Rafter on November 30, 1921 in Hogeland. In her younger years she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school.

On April 25, 1940 Grace married  Elmer Meitzel of Fort Peck, and together they farmed in the Sav­age area before taking a job for a construction company where Grace flagged on the highway. For the last 18 years she worked for Billings News, Inc. She loved yard work and painting pictures of birds and scenery.

   Survivors include her four children, Bill (Carol) Meitzel of Billings, Wilma Kuehn of Butte, Bob (Debbie) Meitzel of Renton, WA, and Mary (Gary) Schmidt of Huntley; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one brother, Ordway “Bud” Rafter of Lewistown; two sisters, Garnet Sumner of Lanexa, VA and Molly Thronson of Bellevue, WA; a sister-in-law, Agnes Thorn of Salem, OR; plus numerous nieces and nephews.
