GLADYS SYLVIA OPHUS

 

  SAN DIEGO - Gladys Sylvia Ophus, 80, Northern Montana College’s first graduate, died in San

Diego, Jan. 10.

  She was the daughter of Nels and Sena Almos and was born Dec. 1, 1913, in Rudyard, Mont. She attended grade school at a country school near the Almos homestead north of Rudyard and graduated frojn high school in Rudyard in 1929. She won a scholarship to Northern Montana College in Havre, Mont., was in the first grad­uating class in 1931 and, because her name, Almos, was the first in. the alphabet, she received the first diploma.

  At age 17, she began teaching at a country school 15 miles north of] Hingham, Mont. near the Canadian border and then taught on the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation.

  She married Burton Ophus of Big Sandy, Mont. July 5, 1939. They~ had one son, Lt. Col. James 8. Ophus of Southfield, Mich.

  After moving to Havre, she worked for the F. A Buttrey Company and was director of the! Red Cross for several years.

  The family moved to Great Falls, Mont. in 1960, where Burton Ophus died in 1975.

  She subsequently moved to Palm Springs, Calif. and then to San Diego where she died.

  She is survived by U. Col. Jam Ophus, his wife Mary and tw grandchildren, Christian and Sylvia and sisters Jeanette Johannesen 0 Portland, Ore., Laura Rathbone 0 Havre and Elaine Almos of San Diego.

  A memorial service will be at 11 am. Monday, May 9, at the Big Sandy Lutheran Church.

  Cremation has taken place.

  Interment of remains was planned in Big Sandy Cemetery.

  She gained a scholarship to Northern Montana College in I-lavre, Mont., and was in the first graduating class in 1931, and because her name Almos was first in the alphabet, she received the first diploma.

  She married Burton Ophus of Big Sandy, Mont., July 5, 1939. They had one son, Lt. Col. James B.
