Gwynn, Elmer Barthol

HAVRE - Lifelong Montana resident Elmer Barthol Gwynn, 90, a former educator and active member of Gideon's International, died of natural causes Sunday at a Havre care center.
Visitation is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Holland and Bonine Funeral Home. His funeral is 10 a.m. Saturday at the Fifth Avenue Christian Church, followed by burial with Masonic rites in Highland Cemetery. A fellowship lunch will be held at the church after the burial.
Survivors include children Sheri K. Potter of Crawfordville, Fla., Karen A. Stout and Hugh I. Gwynn of Havre, Larry J. Gwynn of Wyoming and KaRon Bryson Gwynn of California; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace W. Gwynn, in 1994; a daughter, Judy E. Smith in 1993; a son, Edward R. Gwynn, in 2006; and an infant son, Allen, in 1940.

ELMER GWYNN

Elmer Barthol Gwynn, 90, of Havre died Sunday, June 11, 2006, at Northern Montana Care

Center of natural causes. Viewing will be held at the Holland & Bonine Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Elmer’s funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fifth Avenue Christian Church with Pastor Rowlie Hutton officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery with Masonic graveside services requested by the family. A fellowship

luncheon will be held at the church after the graveside services.

Elmer was born Oct. 24, 1915, in Fort Benton to John Elmer and Ida Ethel (Shadle) Gwynn.

He lived in Loma and on a farm on the St. Joe Road, and at age 10 moved to the farm near Wild Horse Trail.

Elmer married Grace Woods of Brady on May 14, 1939, in Grace’s home. They lived and

farmed on the family farm north of Havre. They had met at church and both attended Northern Montana College, received lifetime teaching certificates, and taught in rural grade

schools several years. Elmer graduated with a bachelor of arts degree.

Elmer and Grace were lifetime active members of Fifth Avenue Christian Church. They

gave their children the very important chance to know Jesus Christ, our Lord God and Savior.

Elmer took his family on three wintertime tours of the United States during the 1950s. He and Grace also toured several European countries twice, including Germany, where their

son Ed was stationed in the Army, and New Zealand, Australia and Israel.

Elmer enjoyed being an active member of Gideon’s International, Farmers Union, Loyal Order of the Moose, past master Havre Lodge No. 55, KYCH of the York Rite, OES, Odd Fellows, National Rifle Association of America and other organizations. Other activities he

enjoyed were inventing and putting together workable machines, building a solid house,

helping his children in school and club work, polishing field rocks into fireplace stones or

jewelry, stamp and coin collecting, genealogy, reading and going to North Central Senior

Citizens Center.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Grace W. Gwynn, in 1994; daughter, Judy

E. Smith, in 1993; son, Edward R. Gwynn, in 2006; infant son, Allen, in 1940; and brother-in-law,

Vernon E. Woods, in 2004.

Survivors include his daughter, Sheri K. (John) Potter of Crawfordville, Fla.; daughter-inlaw, Glenda Gwynn of Phoenix, Ariz.; son-in-law, Jim Smith of Livingston; daughter, Karen A.

(Paul) Stout of Havre; sons, Hugh I. (Charlotte) Gwynn of Havre, Larry J. Gwynn of Wyoming and KaRon Bryson Gwynn of California; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Connie Woods of Conrad.
