Dorothy Ruth Swanson
BIG SANDY -- Dorothy Ruth (Shupe) Swanson, 73, a homemaker, died of
heart failure Monday at a Great Falls hospital.
Her funeral is 2:30 p.m. Friday at Big Sandy High School auditorium,
with burial in Big Sandy Cemetery. Benton Funeral Home of Fort Benton is in
charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Alvin F. Swanson; daughters Kathleen
Getten of Harlem, and Louanna Dillon of Moses Lake, Wash.; sons Richard Kurt
Winters of Forks, Wash., and James Dudley Winters of Great Falls; sisters Louise
Miller and Gladys Mummey of Malta and Florence Moon of Eugene, Ore.; 13
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

BIG SANDY -- Dorothy Ruth Swanson, 73, of Big Sandy, died Monday at a Great Falls hospital of heart
failure.
Swanson was born Jan. 29, 1928
in Harlem to James E. and Rosseta (Bingham) Shupe. She grew up in Harlem and
graduated from Harlem High School.
In 1948, she married Lawrence Richard Robertson in Chinook. They
divorced in 1973. On Dec. 20, 1975, she married Alvin Swanson in Big Sandy.
Swanson was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She enjoyed family gatherings and watching her family compete in rodeos
and other events.
Survivors include her husband, Alvin F. Swanson; daughters, Kathleen
Winters Getten of Harlem, and Louanna Winters Dillon of Moses Lake, Wash.;
sons, Richard Kurt Winters of Forks, Wash., and James Dudley Winters of Great
Falls; sisters, Louise Miller and Gladys Mummey, both of Malta, and Florence
Moon of Eugene, Ore.; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Dorothy (Shupe) Swanson, 73, died of heart failure at a Great Falls
hospital on Monday, July 2, 2001. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 6,
at the Big Sandy High School Auditorium with burial in Big Sandy Cemetery.
Benton Funeral Home of Fort Benton is in charge of arrangements.
Dorothy was born January 29, 1928
in Harlem to James E. and Rosseta (Bingham) Shupe. She grew up in Harlem,
graduating from Harlem High School. In her youth, Dorothy was an excellent
horse woman, Jockeying for many of the neighbors in local races. She generally
rode bareback and barefooted, and always appeared to be glued to the back of
the horse she was riding. Her pride and joy, when she was a teenager, was a
very fast, sylish grey horse, that she spent a great deal of her time riding.
In 1948 she married Lawrence "Umps" Winters in Chinook. They
divorced in 1973 and on December 20, 1975, she married Alvin Swanson in Big
Sandy.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and
had a great love of her children and grandchildren. She really enjoyed watching her family compete in rodeos and
other events, but especially loved family gatherings.
Survivors include her husband, Alvin of Big Sandy; twin daughters,
Kathleen (Winters) Getten of Harlem, and Louanna "Lana" (Winters)
Dillon of Moses Lake, WA; two sons, Richard Kurt Winters of Forks, WA and James
Dudley Winters of Great Falls; three sisters, Louise Miller and Gladys
Mummey, of Malta, and Florence Moon of
Eugene, OR; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
