DOROTHY EVELYN McNEILL

  BIG SANDY - Dorothey Evelyn (Porter Cooke) McNeill, 87, a homemaker, died Friday at her home in Big Sandy of cancer.

  Her funeral is 2 p.m. Monday at Rohrer Methodist Church in Big Sandy, with burial in Big Sandy Cemetery. Benton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

  She was born in Big Springs, Neb., Feb. 22, 1913. The family moved to the North Star Place on Lonsome Prarie outside of Big Sandy when she was a child. She attended Browns Well Grade School and graduated from Big Sandy High School in 1931. She continued her education at Northern Montana College, obtaining her teaching certificate and returned to Lonesome Prarie to teach.

  On Dec. 29, 1934, she married Elgin McNeill. They ranched in the Bear Paw Mountains 65 miles from Big Sandy. The couple raised their four children on the ranch and at Big Sandy. While they were in school, she worked as a typesetter and writer for the local paper, The Mountaineer, returning to the ranch on weekends and in the summer to raise a garden and fowers.

  McNeil's favorite hobby was sewing, and she made and gave away hundreds of quilts. She was able to to quilt until the past year.

  She was a member of the Rohrer United Methodist Church in Big Sandy.

  Surviving are her husband, daughters, Dolly Pursley of Big Sandy and Gloria Sterrett of Havre; sons, Dan McNeill of Chinook and Ton McNeill of Portland, Ore.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

  McNeill was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Anne Kvilhaug and Ethel Ulmam, amd brothers Sam Cooke and Dudley Cooke.

  Surviving are her husband,Elgin of Big Sandy; daughters, Dolly Pursley of Big Sandy and Gloria Sterrett of Havre; sons, Dan McNeill of Chinook and Ton McNeill of Portland, Ore.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

  Benton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
