DORIS NEUFELD

    CHINOOK - Doris Neufeld, 97, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, of natural causes at Sweet Home in Chinook.

    A graveside service was scheduled for 10 a. m. today in the Kuper Memorial Cemetery with burial following. Doris was born Feb. 10, 1909, in Leith, N.D., to Fred and Emma (Cooley) Brinkman. The family moved to Chinook. She was schooled at home by her mother and later attended high school in Chinook, where she was valedictorian of her class. When she was 6 years old, she knew she wanted to be a teacher and her life revolved around studying, researching and being a perpetual student. Doris was in the first class in 1929 at Northern Montana College, later attended college in Dillon. She graduated from Northern Montana College with her teaching degree in 1966, along with her daughter Helen Soper and Helen’s husband, Bob. In 1934, Doris married Frank Neufeld. Doris taught school south of Chinook at Central School, north of Chinook at Logie School and at Hays School for a time. She also taught school at Plains, West Valley near Kalispell, and retired from teaching at Kingman, Ariz. She taught school and Frank worked as a farmer and mechanic while living in Arizona and western Montana. Some of her students still live in the area. She also tutored students. Doris loved to teach and shared many fond memories. Doris grew and nurtured flowers and one year a picture of her with her flowers, which she had kept safe into the month of November, appeared in the Chinook Opinion.

    Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1978; brothers, Clair and Del Brinkman; and grandson, Randy Soper. Survivors include her daughters, Myrla McCoy of Chinook and Helen (Bob) Soper of Havre; sister, Lona Chapman of Chinook; grandchildren, Tim McCoy of Townsend, Kelly Carlson of Boney Lake, Wash., and Chris Soper of Pflugerville, Texas; great-grandchildren, Corie Soper of Havre and Ryan Soper of Pflugerville. Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook
