Chinook teen dies after pool accident

By the Associated Press and the Daily News Staff

CHINOOK - A Chinook teen-ager died Tuesday morning at Northern Montana Hospital in Havre after he was pulled from the municipal pool here Monday night, Blame County Coroner Marvin Edwards said.

The victim was identified as Brian Brekke, 16

.

Edwards said Brekke, who had Reye's Syndrome, may have had a seizure while swimming in the pool

with others. He said Brekke was under water for only a few seconds before being taken from the pool about 8:30 p.m.

Brekke was well-known in the area because he had been the subject of several fund-raisers. Elaine

Campbell of the Blaine County nurse's office said the boy was one of the first youngsters in Montana to survive his disease.

Reye's Syndrome is a complication resulting from viral infections  in children - usually pre-school-   aged children - and is usually  iassociated with influenza B or chicken pox, Campoell said this morning. She said that the best research indicates that giving aspirin to young children suffering from viral infections is thought to cause the disease.

"It used to be almost 100 percent fatal," she said. "Now they're havmg more success in treating it But they didn't know much about it when Brian got it. He was in the second grade, just eight years old and he has been ilving with the after effects ever since."

Campbell said that the youth suffered numerous seizures and was heavily medicated, which made

school difficult for him.

The disease causes swelling of the brain, Campbell said. It was hoped Brekke would be a candidate for surgery, but doctors at a Texas medical facility he was taken to last year ruled it out, she added.

A spokesman for Edwards Funeral Home said this mornmg that funeral services had not yet been set, but would probably be either Saturday or Monday.
