My
Dad Bert Inman Jr. 1908-1970
Inman is an English occupational name for the keeper of the public house, or inn, from Middle English innmann, from Old English inn = abode, lodging + mann = man. This is distinctly different from the tavern, where beverages were sold, but no lodging was offered.
THE INMAN COAT of ARMS:(info from Bernice Jump in 1995)
THE INMAN NAME: The INMAN name has had many spellings in early
American History. Since 1910 I have been collecting family history.
Thoasand of hours have been spent in research, and thousands of miles
have been traveled by me over the past decades into forty-nine
states.
Researchin surnames seems to reveal that the Inman name has existed
in England for unknown centuries. I have many Inman families in my files
dating back to 1645. I also, have records showing the name INMAN back to
1379. Willelmus Inman lived in England in 1379.
Research indicates that the name INMAN was perhaps spelled INNMAN,
(The innman) who cared for the inns in England. Certainly, it developed
from the occupative surname group such as the inn servants, who cared for
the needs of their lords, their horses and equipment
In 1619 the first INMAN came to America on the Falcon ship. He was
26 years old. In 1646 Edward Inman came. Soon thereafter, many others
came. Research shows such spellings as INDMON in 1379; INMAN in 1379
also. In early American History research, I have recorded such spellings
as INNMANN; INNMAN; ENMAN; INDMAN; INMANN; INMOND; and others.
